What certification does Rezon Halos® hold?

Rezon Halos® is CE/UKCA Category II PPE.

Rezon Halos® has published conformity documentation under the European PPE framework. Our EU Declaration of Conformity states that Rezon Halos is in conformity with Regulation (EU) 2016/425 and lists EN ISO 13688:2013, EN 13277-1:2000 and EN 13277-4:2001/A1:2007 as the standards used in the assessment. The declaration also states that EU type examination was issued by Italcert, Notified Body 0426. [1].

Why does CE/UKCA PPE conformity matter?

Where a product is placed on the market as personal protective equipment, conformity matters because it supports lawful market placement and demonstrates that the product has been assessed against the applicable framework. HSE states that most new PPE placed on the GB market must be UKCA or CE marked, supplied with a declaration of conformity and instructions in English. GOV.UK also states that a UK Declaration of Conformity must be drawn up for most products lawfully bearing a UKCA marking before they are placed on the market [2, 3].

Certification supports conformity with the applicable CE/UKCA PPE framework and demonstrates that the product has been assessed against the relevant legal and technical requirements. This is different from comparative biomechanical performance testing, which helps show how a product performs under defined laboratory conditions.

CE/UKCA PPE certification is crucial for ensuring safety, legal compliance, and reliability in protecting wearers from hazards.

Is certification the same as performance testing?

No. Certification and comparative biomechanical performance testing are related but different. Certification supports conformity with the applicable CE/UKCA PPE requirements. Comparative testing helps show how a product performs under a defined laboratory methodology, such as the Virginia Tech STAR system [1, 6].

How CE/UKCA PPE certification works

Where headwear is placed on the market as personal protective equipment, it must comply with the applicable CE/UKCA PPE conformity requirements in the relevant market. In the EU, this is governed by Regulation (EU) 2016/425. PPE legislation is a completely separate piece of legislation from and should not be confused with the Medical Devices Directive.

Head protection beyond cuts and scrapes falls into either Category II (independent testing and certification) or Category III (independent testing and certification, plus ongoing surveillance of production quality).

For Category II and III products, independent conformity assessment bodies are involved in the certification process. In the EU, this is carried out by a notified body. In the UK, equivalent conformity assessment is handled through the UKCA framework. This process supports the manufacturer’s right to apply the relevant conformity marking when the legal requirements have been met. The independent European notified body/UK approved body will ensure testing covers all of the essential requirements of the PPE legislation. A manufacturer of protective headwear can only place a CE or UKCA mark on the product and/or packaging if the product has been tested and an EU or UK Type Examination Certificate issued by an independent European-notified/UK-approved body.

Rezon Halos® is the first, and currently the only known protective headband of its type with published CE and UKCA PPE conformity positioning in the UK and Europe, having secured Category II PPE certification from Italcert Notified body No.0426. It is legally approved to use the CE mark.
Halos® is also UKCA marked, which in accordance with British Government measures, permits a product already covered by a valid EU-type examination certificate.
